Invited: Atlantis Music Festival Showcase, John Lennon Bus!!

Posted on June 29, 2007

Yes folks, it’s true - I can now officially tell you that I have been selected as an Atlantis Music Festival showcasing artist for this year’s festival in Atlanta, GA.

Although I don’t have the actual date of the showcase I do know that admission will be open to the general public and that if you’re in the Atlanta area the week of September 19-22 you should definitely check out this festival and of course come out and see the band rock our showcase!

YOU CAN HELP MAKE MY TRIP TO ATLANTA EVEN MORE SUCCESSFUL!!

As part of the festival I am participating in a great contest they have going called the People’s Choice Showcase. The only way for me to win is by having you - my fans - head over to my new myTracks.com page and listen to, download, and share my music! Creating an account is simple and FREE! So head over there now!

OK - That’s all I have for now. I will keep you posted with details as I get them. I know that as the band and I travel from Austin to Atlanta and back in September you can bet we will be playing some shows along the way!

The other great news I got today was that the John Lennon Songwriting Contest folks have asked me to once again perform at one of their Educational Tour Bus Stops. This one will be my FIFTH - Yep that’s 5 - appearance at a bus stop for the JLSC and it will take place during the Summer NAMM Show at Austin’s Convention Center on July 28th. I do not have a time yet, but I do know it will be my first John Lennon Tour Bus show with a full band!

What a great day filled with great news! See you at the Continental Club next week!!

Monterey Lives On One More Time

Shake!

Each year, at the end of the annual SXSW Music Festival here in Austin, TX, Paul Minor puts on a benefit show at the Hole In The Wall. He picks a theme and really takes it to the next level. For the past two years I have been proud to be a part of that tradition.

Last year, was the Bangladesh concert tribute and wow - it was great. I owe a lot to that night at the Hole. Later in the year, based on the show’s first success, Paul was asked to put on another version of it at Threadgill’s World Headquarters on the actual anniversary of the show. That was the night that Jody Denberg heard me perform “That’s The Way God Planned It” and suggested I record it for my upcoming CD. And the rest is history…

Nakia's Been Loving You...

Tonight, we did it again. Except this time, “it” was the 40th anniversary of the Monterey Pop Festival - the Grandfather of all music festivals. Earlier this year at the Hole we put on this show to an overwhelmed crowd and so once again - on the actual anniversary date - we went back out there and rocked it. This year, I was asked to sing the music of Otis Redding. At the original festival in 1967, Otis used Booker T. and the MGs as his backing band, so who better to back me up than McLemore Ave. We came out screaming with “Shake!” then slowed it down for “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” and brought down the house with “Try A Little Tenderness.” Later in the night I sat in with Sheboygan to recreate the sounds of the Mamas and the Papas.

The night was captured on various cameras and hopefully some decent audio too, but here is the beginning of what I hope will be several shots from the show. These were taken by none other than Roberto the Faithful.

Tenderness

A big thank you to everyone who came out to see the show despite what the weatherman said about it raining! An extra big thank you to all of the musicians who put so much effort into their performances and of course, the man himself… Paul Minor, for putting it all together.

I met a lot of new people tonight who enjoyed my performance but their was one youngster whose mother brought him up to meet me directly after my set so he could let me know that he thought I was a “really good singer.” When I thanked him and asked if he was a singer, he simply said, “No. But now I want to be one someday.” Now seriously… Who could ask for anything more out of life than to inspire a child by using the gifts that you have been blessed with.

A KLBJ Doubleshot & Monterey Pop With Your Pop!

Posted on June 14, 2007

Well, a VERY special thanks to Loris Lowe over at KLBJ for being such a gracious host on Tuesday night. Mac and I had a blast playing some tunes and doing the interview during Local Licks. Loris is truly one of the reasons I still have faith in what is left of “American radio” as I grew up listening to it. She’s a real pro and really down to earth. Special thanks to Jonna who was on hand to capture video for the station and to take this quick photo at the end of the night!

Thanks to all the listeners who called in to win the CDs and posters and a very big thanks to all of the listeners who continue to call in and request my music at KLBJ-FM (93.7) and any other station! But… While we are talking about KLBJ I wanted to mention that I will be on the air AGAIN with Dudley & Bob in the morning at 8AM. Late notice I know - but I hope you get to hear it. Just and interview with Paul Minor and myself discussing this Sunday’s performance of the 40th Anniversary Tribute Concert for Bangladesh. You might remember that I did one of these during SXSW this year. Well, we are doing it again and this time it’s at Threadgill’s World Headquarters so get down there around 6PM to catch acts like McLemore Avenue, Superego, Sheboygan, Li’l Cap’n Travis, Ted Roddy, Fastball, Cat Scientist and many more!! I’ll be doing the Otis Redding tunes.

Finally - I wanted to put a link up to the new handbill I have been busy putting out around town for my upcoming Continental Club gigs during July. The Southern Cousins and I will be rocking it down in SoCo on First Thursday in July on the 5th and then again on the 19th so get down there and shake it!

Download this thing and send it to your friends or post it all over MySpace!
