Recovered From SXSW & Ready To Rock
Posted on March 22, 2007
I am listening to Heroes
from the album “Heroes” by David Bowie
on my iTunes right now!
SXSW came and went and so did my voice like 3 times! Learning to take better care of it though.
I must say that it was a big success with 5 shows in a row and getting to meet with some good folks from various labels and distribution outlets and just bumping into old friends that I don’t get to see except this time each year.
I think the highlight of my week was watching my friend Jody Denberg sing with Pete Townshend and Ian McLagan & The Bump Band at the Austin Music Awards. I met Jody at that awards show 3 years ago and it was just one of those moments that you know you’ll never forget… Something special. To see how far we have both come in that time and talk about it afterward backstage it was really cool. I was lucky enough to snap a pic of us together this year though. Earlier that day - I got to do KGSR’s annual morning show broadcast from the Four Seasons. I had the Fresh Up Girls show up in the PJs and we just rocked it… At 6:30 in the damn morning! It was definitely my 2nd favorite moment of the week with reading from Miss Pamela Des Barres book a very close third. I must say that hanging out with Pamela’s ex-husband, Michael Des Barres spoiled me! He’s one of the most charming men I have ever had the chance to meet in my life. God bless them both!
I really enjoyed playing the Red Gorilla Music show on Thursday and the Texas Music Magazine Party was a total blast. I was glad to finally meet that crew of folks from the magazine. I have spoken to them on the phone, knew their husbands and brothers and stuff, but not actually met them! Stewart and the gang took care of us though and I am hoping to see a review of the record in their magazine sooner than later!
RajiWorld+1 - the annual party put on by Roggie to showcase her clients was a big success. I bumped into Ed Bailey there and of course Brenda and Mark were there. There was a guy who filmed it (Scott - where are you?) and I am hoping to get some of that footage. For a 4 song set, it was great. This was, sadly, Mac McNabb’s only SXSW gig with me as he had been on vacation the whole week. No horns and only one Fresh Up Girl, but honestly it worked best that way. I think you’ll begin to see more of a core set of musicians and less of the big shoe with exceptions of course.
The end of the week was great with the annual Hole In The Wall SIMS benefit put together by Paul Minor making a big LOUD noise on the drag! From the quiet beginnings of Rajamani and Trish and Darin all the way through myself joined by McLemore Avenue and Superego - We rocked it! Photos at my Flickr page of the whole week.
I did end up straining some kind of muscle in my neck. I have seen a doctor and we are watching it to make sure it doesn’t get worse and I am being treated for it and a sore throat. Here’s to a speedy recovery, right?
Tonight is my big debut over at the Continental Club!! This show is right after The Mother Truckers‘ weekly gig and right before Li’l Cap’n Travis so standby to rock and get there early and drink lots of booze! Don’t forget that today’s “Nakia’s Notes” (my email newsletter) features a coupon good for a discount on merch at any show through 3/31 this month.
Finally, my CD has officially become a “Texan” (I guess?) It’s now up at the Texas Music Wall over at Waterloo Records and as of today it will be featured on their “Hear Texas Here” listening post for a whole month! So now you can listen to the whole disc before buying it!! Look for the ad in today’s Austin Chronicle too!
Well, I am VERY tired and need my beauty sleep. HA! Thanks again to everybody who came out to the shows last week and to all the new and old friends who I got to hang out with. It was a blast! See you next year!

And The Award Goes To…

I am listening to Sweet Pain
from the album “Destroyer” by Kiss
on my iTunes right now!
Roberto the Faithful and I hit the town last night at this year’s Austin Music Awards.
Always kicking off the SXSW music festival it was a blast this year for sure with surprise guest Pete Townsend sitting in with the Bump Band and chatting up Michelle Shocked for a while about Gospel music and its power to heal.
Here’s some photos for from the night…. Click here.
Also - head over to KGSR’s site to see a great shot of me from their annual Four Seasons broadcast. Nothing like a 6:30AM show after being up all night to really get the day off to a good start.
I have to bolt for now though… Off to the Red Gorilla Music Festival show at 1PM.

Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you - I am up on iTunes as of today - right now - this instant! What are you iPod crazy folks waiting for?? Get the tunes today! I will let you in on a secret… If you buy the album on iTunes you lose the complete beautiful artwork created by the ever handsome Mr. Ryan Walker so, yes , it is cheaper there than it is at CDBaby or in your local stores, but like I said - the full package isn’t there and trust me - you want my package!
In case you’re wondering I am also going to be available at these fine digital merchants as well. The album isn’t on these services yet, but I figured I would give you the info - it will be soon!
