What A Week

Posted on May 29, 2006

I am listening to I Can’t Help You Anymore
from the album “The Forgotten Arm” by Aimee Mann
on my iTunes right now!

Well, I have once again succeeded in letting an entire week pass without blogging. If this were homework, I would be failing. But you know what? I am OK with that right now, because so much else is going on around me. Here’s a brief recap though.

MONDAY

I got up early to head over to Matt Hubbard’s place. We were going to drive out together to Willie’s to set up and chart the tunes that we were recording for my record. I discovered that Matt had decided to meet Landis at The Omeletty for breakfast, so I headed over there to join them. Then Matt and I drove out to set up and chart with David. Landis arrived shortly after us and we began really getting into the tunes until Kevin arrived around 3 and began pressing the record button for the rest of the day. I took time out to be photographed by Mary Sledd, and she took some great pics of the guys recording too. The girl is good. We wrapped up close to 9 with 5 songs pretty much done minus some overdubs and vocals. Those 5 tunes were Texas Crescent Moon, Broken Spoke, Where To Read, Family Veins, and Wasted Days and Wasted Nights. Joe Ely’s tune wasn’t ready yet, so we are going back later to do it an 2 more originals to finish up the record. All and all, it was great, but I was SO exhausted at the end of the day. Matt ended up really digging my Wurlitzer parts and so I played the Wurly all day! LOL! I was so worn out! Thanks to everyone out at Luck that day that made it so much fun.

TUESDAY

Back to RajiWorld. I got caught up really good. Roggie and I got finally have lunch together at Freddie’s and then it was back to the office. I was supposed to meet with Guy Monroe for a vocal lesson but he had an emergency and canceled. That afternoon we found out that Clifford Antone had died and Roggie left the office and I worked until about 6 or so and then went home to meet Roberto the Hungry for dinner.

WEDNESDAY

I went into work and got my new display set up and did some basic stuff at the office. Nothing out of the ordinary. Lunch with Bo and Angel. Roggie was out because she had family in town for a wedding. After work, I went down to Antone’s for about 3 hours of the Memorial jam that they put on for Clifford. It was so crowded and I was beat so I went home about 7 and had dinner with Roberto and then Bill called me up and invited me out to the Chain Drive to see Benko and Cue who were both VERY GOOD! I highly recommend them both if you can catch them. We all went over to Alex’s place to check out his new painting and then finally I got in around 3 or 4. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

THURSDAY

I woke up and got my ass where it needed to be… A meeting. I hit the nooner and afterwards I met Roggie at Zen for lunch to discuss some work related stuff. After that I headed over to the office to do some contract calls and then I left around 6:30 to meet Roggie at Lucky Lounge to see Ian McLagan and the Bump Band do their weekly thing. It was great - of course. Mac is really such a sweetheart, and I love Mark. He and I have had some good chats lately. After the show, Roggie and I headed over to Cuba Libre for some AMAZING food and then over to Antone’s to stand and stand and stand and stand until we could stand no more. James Hunter was playing and although he was REALLY good, I just couldn’t stay on my feet any more, and nor could Roggie.

FRIDAY

I took the day off from work. I relaxed. I did not see X-Men 3. I ate too much at Denny’s. I made a big dash to clean the house that ended in about half a room being cleaned. UGH! It was an evening of napping and a late dinner. Not much else.

SATURDAY

Roberto the Faithful and I have been contemplating new furniture for the living room. We decided at lunch at Firebowl that we were on a “5 year plan.” We will take 5 years to really fix up the house and get it how we want it and if we like it, we stay, and depending on our situation, maybe sell this house and get another. But for now, we needed new living room furniture. (Seriously, have you seen our sofa?) So, we headed out for a day of sofa sitting, leather touching, question asking, and sale seeking. We ended up really liking our first choice at our first stop: Foley’s. (Now actually Macy’s) So, we got a quote to sleep on it until Sunday. For dinner, we met up with Marney at Carrabba’s and then he and I hit Waterloo and I picked up Ben Lee - Grandpaw Would, and Joe Cocker - Maddogs and Englishmen. Then, he showed me a duplex he’s looking to get into and I headed back home. Then Robert and I went out to the Chain Drive to see who was out and after the bar closed we came home and chatted online for a while and just chilled.

SUNDAY

We did lunch and then we hit Relax The Back to grab a pillow for Robert’s step-Dad, Clinton. Then it was over to Greyhound to put it on a bus. Afterwards, we hit Foley’s and took the furniture plunge. We grabbed a sofa, chair, and a nice area rug. Good times. Sunday evening, I hit my home group meeting. So amazing to see not only 2 people picking up multiple years, but even cooler - NEWCOMERS! Good meeting for sure. Came home and got my Law and Order: Criminal Intent on! I really dig that show. It’s one of the only ones I can truly say I like these days. Then some more late night chatting and finally ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

TODAY!!

Today was Danny Young’s birthday and he threw a big shindig at his Texacali restaurant in South Austin, so Roberto the Faithful and I hit that up for a bit. I bumped into Mike Snyder from Allgood Cafe in Dallas there. I think I might play there soon. After that, we headed over to Dairy Queen to grab a couple of dip cones and then to my friend Joey’s house for his BBQ. Good times for sure. Lots of my friends there and my sponsor showed up too and he happened to have a t-shirt for me from the convention he just got back from. Kick ass! Free clothes! Afterward, I needed a nap and I overslept a bit. I was going to see X-Men, but oh well. Then it was dinner time and a quick trip to the HEB for some toiletries. Which brings me to this point here.

This week I expect to get a lot done though. I have some goals in mind and I am excited to say I also have my first Tranny From Houston rehearsal with Mark and Chris. I am also hoping to get with Mac at his studio and demo some other soul tunes. Of course, RajiWorld will be in full effect too, but I feel I need to pull back to 3 days a week there so I don’t get too burned out. Will have to talk with Roggie about it tomorrow.

For now, I need to do some Step Work. Here’s to you!

Number 9?? Number 9????

Posted on May 21, 2006

I am listening to Waiting In the Wings
from the album “Master of Disguise” by Lizzy Borden
on my iTunes right now!

And I must say that it makes me SO FRIGGIN’ happy to tell you that! I used to LOVE this record. (Yes, folks, I am a former mullet-sportin’, black t-shirt wearing metal head!!) This was one of my favorite records from that era in my life. My buddy, Chris Whisenhunt turned me onto it. Chris, is now a pastor in my hometown of Fort Payne, AL, but he still rocks. I saw him a while back and we talked tunes.

Now, onto my weekend so far. Finally starting to feel better. It started with a good dinner with Roberto the Faithful on Friday night and then we went over to University Baptist Church to meet up with Roggie and Poltz. Unfortunately, Steve had to bolt before he got to meet Robert. I don’t think I have even told Robert about the whole, “…well hook a brother up!” comment that Steve made recently. Definitely one of the highlights of the summer so far. That phrase is among my current favorites next to one Billy and I started using the same day - “…it’s for the children.” Let’s use this last one in a few sentences, shall we?

“I am going to give him a piece of my mind… For the children.” or
“Could you please roll down the window? It’s for the children.” Finally… Billy’s funny example:
“Uhm, ma’am? Please leave a little extra room for cream and sugar? It’s for the children.”

Oh… Where was I? Yes, so Poltz had to bolt, but that was actually a good thing after all because he left his artist pass for Roggie and then she got an extra from Tony Scalzo and finally, Danielle from the Shivers came out with one final pass for Roberto the Patient and like that… We were in! This - again - was extremely good, because tickets were selling for $40 - $100 outside the church.
Yep, Will Taylor and Strings Attached doing the Beatles’ White Album featuring Joe Ely, Tony Scalzo, Billy Harvey, White Ghost Shivers, Tucker Livingston, Seela, Abra Moore, Carolyn Wonderland, Gary Clark Jr., and gosh… so many more - now you can see why it was a hot ticket! It was pretty kickass! Roberto the Concert Goer and I certainly enjoyed it and I know Roggie did too.

I think Joe, Tony, Billy, Seela, WGS, and Carolyn were probably my favorites, but it was just too amazing to narrow it down like that, so scratch that!

I will say it was an amazing time for me to catch up with some folks I haven’t seen in a while and to continue my discussion with Joe about his offer to let me record one of his tunes for my new record I start with Matt Hubbard and David Zettner producing on Monday! (That’s less than a day folks!) Joe is going to look for something a bit more upbeat to fill in that much needed slot right now.

Saturday saw a much needed lazy sleep in for ungodly hours come and finally around 3 it was time to get up, take a shower, buy my niece a copy of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” from the iTMS and then head over to see MI:3 with Roberto the Movie Critic. We both give this threequel 4 big thumbs way up!! Funny, we eventually made our way to Kerbey Lane on Kerbey where our favorite manager, John, was working and we agreed that the last MI (that’s 2 if you’re counting?) was “way too Woo!” LOL! I am really tired of seeing action movies slow things down. This movie was tense, quick, and rough. I dug it. Bravo.

I did open my new action figure today and wow I love it! Peter Griffin is the perfect guy to put in a crazy gun-totin’ cougar outfit! And I love the smell of fresh action figures!

I think I might try and make it to the Universal Unitarian joint in the AM (OK - later in the AM) and catch my first Sunday service in AGES! I have been craving some good old fashioned spirituality and after talking to a buddy of mine who goes there, this place sounds right up my alley. A little church, a little pagan, and a lotta love!! We’ll see. I may sleep in again! I mean, it’s already almost 3AM!

Will Hoge on the iTunes now. I need to play with my settings on Ecto to make these templates go to iTMS instead of Google. Go buy yourself a copy of Carousel by Will Hoge. Great record! Nita… You know I miss you when I listen to this one.

Later y’all!

Another Day In Bed

Posted on May 18, 2006

I am listening to New York Groove
from the album “Kiss Box (Disc 3)” by Kiss
on my iTunes right now!

Well, I have successfully spent almost an entire day in bed. I did get up several times to try and move around and I even made it outside to walk to the end of the block and back, but boy I paid for that later. Looks like I might have to miss the whole day at RajiWorld tomorrow too! :(
So, as the day draws to a close I am trying to take a moment and reflect on what I have learned from this experience. This is something that my new friend Barry has taught me. I can safely say that I have these things to take away from the experience:

1. Don’t yell. I should never ever EVER yell. No matter what is going on. This endangers my voice and my voice is my only true instrument. So, unless I am screaming bloody murder… No more yelling.

2. Invest in a really fluffy pillow. Penicillin in your ass cheek hurts kids. If you’re going to try and sit around the house after having a nice thick shot of it, you’re going to need something nice, big, and most of all comfy! Unfortunately, I didn’t have this, so I stayed in bed most of the time. It does make me wish I had bought that Fatboy though.

Thank God for Roberto The Faithful though! I would have been a mess without him to help me around the house.

On a super major happy positive note, The Mother Truckers have been officially added into rotation at KGSR. This is really good news for Teal and Josh. Teal has agreed to sing with me on my recording next week at Willie’s.

It’s been over a week since my last NA meeting. Got to hit one up tomorrow night or Saturday for sure. I am missing the fellowship and sharing.

Oh and I got a new chubby action figure last week! Peter Griffin - Family Guy series 5.
