Sharon Jones Invites Nakia On Stage To Sing Duet

Posted on November 4, 2008

Nakia joins Sharon Jones on stage for duet.

Last night, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings performed at La Zona Rosa here in Austin. The Red State Blues show benefitted the Travis Country Democrats and one of my favorite organizations, SIMS.

You may recall my encounter with Sharon during ACL that was the highlight of the festival for me. If not, click here. When I found out that they were coming back to Austin, I made a point to show up early and say hi to the Dap-Kings and of course Sharon. Everyone remembered me from ACL and I gave them all a copy of the new unreleased CD, Water To Wine. I chatted with Sharon and Neil (Tenor Sax Dap-King) about my time in Africa and growing up in Alabama singing in the church. A little bit of time went by and it was time for them to take the stage.

A couple of songs in, they played the song that Sharon called me up on during ACL. Remember - that time it was totally random. This time, she called another fellow out of the audience and had some fun with him.

Then, they played a brand new song. As it started, Sharon looked over her shoulder to me and said, “Hey Nakia, get on up here! Come on Nakia!” and I hopped on stage as she began to serenade me with this new tune written by Dave (Trumpet Dap-King) called Are You Gonna Give Me All Of Your Love (I think?). As she and I danced and grooved, she turned the microphone toward me and I jumped in, responding to her call. The crowd went crazy and we turned it on! Back and forth we went on the stage singing to each other about how she needed all of my love and I wanted to give it to her. This culminated in me going down on my knees as if to plead and beg with her and then she slowly began to come down to meet me, with us pouring our hearts into the microphone and out into the audience.

As the song ended, the crowd was in a roar and I waved goodbye and left the stage. Sharon thanked me and told the crowd, “Now that was the real deal, y’all… Nakia’s the real deal. He’s got soul. And that’s what the Dap-Kings are all about.”

Later, Sharon told me that the song was brand new and they had only played it 2-3 other times and that she was really pleased with how it sounded with us both on it. Naturally, I suggested we record a version.

Here’s to hoping it happens.

Thank you Sharon & all of the Dap-Kings and to Kay and Graham for organizing the event and of course to my amazing booking agent Roggie Baer for making sure I was there to cross paths with Sharon again.

Nakia Performs Water To Wine On Fox 7’s Good Day Austin

Posted on October 23, 2008

This morning I woke up WAY earlier than normal to load up in the piano and make an appearance on Fox 7’s Good Day Austin to help promote the South Padre International Music Festival next weekend. Earlier that morning Tim Hayden, the festival’s producer, had been on talking about the festival and I was asked to come down and bring a taste of things to come. I had planned on bringing the band along, but scheduling was tight.

I ended up performing a solo version of “Water To Wine” and talking a bit about the festival, Momo’s, our show with Willie Nelson this weekend, and the new record - which by the way - will be on sale at the show on Sunday and at SPI Music Fest.

Click here to check out the clip of the interview and the performance.

Nakia Is G Style Magazine September/October Cover Boy!

Posted on October 20, 2008

I was looking through my posts and suddenly realized that in all the ACL prep and craziness I totally missed the opportunity to post about this amazing honor. But here I am - making up for it. I hope!

In Austin, we are really fortunate to have this great new magazine called L Style/G Style. It’s bi-monthly and they feature some amazing members of the Austin GLBT community. So far, each issue has had a theme with each cover (L Style and G Style) and feature story. This last issue - the one I was on - they chose music! My good friend Amy Cook totally rocked out the L Style cover and I was more than happy to pose for Michael Thad Carter, the photographer who took the shot on the covers and inside the magazine as well.

I can’t tell you how happy it made me to be featured and the Editor who did the story on me, Chantal Outon, wrote a gorgeous piece about my life and my music. Everyone at the magazine has been great. They are getting ready to celebrate their first anniversary as a magazine and you can find out more about the party they are throwing for it after the jump.

Nakia Is A Soul Man

Here’s a direct link to view the magazine in their super-cool Internet magazine viewer! It’s just like reading - but without the paper! You can even flip the pages! Check out the story and I suggest reading through the whole thing as they mention me several times in various spots.

Video Interviews With Roxwel.com & Paste Magazine

Posted on October 3, 2008

During ACL I had time to do several interviews. Two of my favorites were Roxwel.com and Paste Magazine. Take a look…

Nakia and His Southern Cousins - ACL Music Festival Coverage
Video Codes at www.roxwel.com

I had the Fresh Up Girls with me for the Roxwel interview and they looked lovely, didn’t they?

Paste’s Kevin Keller asked a lot of questions but it appears that he is editing them into other montages and the first of those came out today. This one is about politics. More specifically what song would be your campaign theme if you were running for President. I’m a shameless promo whore, but you can see some more thoughtful responses on this video from folks like Nicole Atkins, Colour Revolt, Band of Heathens, Okkervil River, Mike Farris and Tegan & Sara. Austin Chronicle: ABCs of ACL - N is for Nakia, Review & More…

Posted on October 3, 2008

The Austin Chronicle has posted several items about my appearance with Sharon Jones and our set on Sunday at the WaMu tent. Here’s a quick sampling…

From the “ABCs of ACL” post:

N is for Nakia: The local soul grizzly danced on stage with Sharon Jones on Saturday and led his Southern Cousins in one of my favorite Sunday sets.

Margaret Moser’s festival “Confessions of a Festival Weenie” recap:

Most unexpected appearance: While performing, Sharon Jones stuck a microphone in Nakia’s face and was blown away when he sang back at her.

From the official Chronicle Review of our Sunday set:

Nakia & His Southern Cousins stir sprinkles of rock, country, and gospel into the stew, but make no mistake, this booming Appalachian-born local blues belter is a soul man all the way, from his bushy beard down to his Budweiser belly. It wasn’t quite the tens of thousands that watched Nakia shake his groove thing onstage with Sharon Jones the day before, but he and his band earned several hundred converts with the jumping-jack keys of “Choose Your Poison” and heartbroken ballads “All Over You” and “Making It Up to My Baby.” Backed by the Marvelettes-styled dance moves of the Fresh-Up Girls, who were dutifully dressed for Sunday service with white gloves, etc., the Cousins gave Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round in Circles” a soaring workout, while an impassioned cover of Ryan Adams’ “Touch, Feel and Lose” brought Nakia to his knees and the crowd to its feet.

From Off The Record’s mention of my appearance with Sharon Jones:

On the local front, White Denim’s compact funk solidified the figurative meeting point between Gnarls Barkley and the Raconteurs. Local soul shouter Nakia held his own onstage with Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, while Bavu Blakes, donning a Barack Obama mask, waxed political following an introduction from Mayor Will Wynn.

I am still reeling from the high that this experience gave me, and I plan to write more about it soon, but for now, I will just start posting photos, press, and more as it comes in. Here’s what Paste Magazine had to say about what happened today during Sharon Jones’ set…

We headed back over to AMD later for Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. Speaking of sweaty, these folks are not known for dressing for the weather. A few months back at Bonnaroo, Sharon looked hot in a sequined black mini-dress—and I do mean hot, like a super fabulous solar panel. And her Dap Kings, then as today, were decked out in full-on suits—those dry-cleaning bills must be ridiculous, abecause you know they sweat right through them. It just wouldn’t be the same if they came out in khakis and wifebeaters, though today Sharon seemed to have made a wise choice of a floatier-looking white floral sundress. She still had on some confoundingly fancy silver heels, but those came off, too, for one of the highlights of the set, a wild song and dance tour through her personal ancestry. Another highlight was “How Do You Let A Good Man Down?” for which she called down a random good man from the VIP deck to dance with her. We learned later that the burly, eager volunteer was Nakia Reynoso, who’s performing at the fest tomorrow with his Southern Cousins.

News 8 Austin: Local Singer Says Playing ACL Is Dream Come True

Posted on September 25, 2008

Following our knock ‘em dead performance at the Four Seasons as part of the KGSR ACL preview show, I was approached by a beautiful young reporter from News 8 Austin. Heidi Zhou said she had enjoyed our performance and heard a bit of my “story” and asked me if I would be interested in being profiled for the station’s coverage of ACL. She said that I had a real “passion” in my voice and that she was really excited by the tunes. Of course, I am not camera shy at all so I agreed to do the interview, but only if she promised to give me a few minutes to cool down and dry off. After Black Joe Lewis screamed out a couple tunes, Heidi and I met outside on the balcony of the Four Seasons for a few minutes. She also spoke with Bryan Beck of KGSR for the piece as well.

The whole thing just ran on the 5 o’clock news and will run again several times most likely during the weekend, but if you missed it or don’t live in Austin, just click here: Nakia’s ACL Dream - to watch the video and read the story.

KXAN: Nakia & His Southern Cousins Take On ACL

Posted on September 23, 2008

Yesterday afternoon I had the pleasure of being interviewed by KXAN’s Blair Shiff. We met up at Momo’s on W. 6th and took some time to talk about the ACL Festival, my hometown, and KISS. Here’s a bit from the interview…

“Nakia recalls the exact moment he found out he would play ACL.

“Probably the first thing I did was smile real big and thank God,” said Nakia. “I moved here right after ACL (festival) started. I remember saying ‘I wanna play (the Austin City Limits TV Show) that stage and I wanna play that festival.’ That’s how I live my life. Here’s what I want and here are the steps to get there.”

To read the entire article and watch some of the interview as well as an exclusive to KXAN live video clip of Choose Your Poison, click here.
