Happy Days Here We Come!
Posted on April 21, 2007
Well, for the time being, I am taking a break from this website. (At least a few hours… Geez, I have been at it 2 nights in a row! - MUST SLEEP!)
As I lay my head down on the pillow, I will be dreaming of all of the excited visitors to my site who exclaim, “Wow! Look! Nakia updated his website!”
(I think I am dreaming already.)
But seriously, happy days are really on the way… Or should I say “Happy Hours!” I am overjoyed to make the official announcement that me and the Southern Cousins are going to be taking over happy hours for The Mother Truckers while they are out on the road.
They will be gone most of May and July, so if you hop over to the new “Shows” section, you will find all the info you need for all of the dates and times for each show we are doing. This is something I have been hoping would happen for a while and Roggie has been working hard to orchestrate it with Steve over at the club. Thanks Roggie and thank you Steve for the opportunity! Now it’s just up to YOU - the trusty fans to show up and rock out!
In other show news, the band will be performing a private event for KLRU in June and the best part about it is that we get to play the gig on the Austin City Limits soundstage!! How awesome is that, huh? It’s a dream come true for me, I know. Sure, the cameras won’t be rolling, but just being up there - knowing who else came before me… That’s going to be awesome.
Mac and I demoed some new material tonight so we could get the rest of the band learning some new originals before the happy hours kick in. We cut demos for “Nuthin’ But The Rent,” “All Over You,”, “Daddy’s Dope,” and “Gotta Get That Dolla” - All new songs of course and we worked on several others as well.
Well, my brain just officially shut down. I will be putting out a new “Nakia’s Notes” this coming week, so look for more then!

So here is the beginnings of what it shall look like.
Send your feedback my way if you wish.

I am listening to Cincinnati
from the album “Royal Street Inn” by Rex Moroux
on my iTunes right now!
First, let me say that if you don’t know my friend Rex Moroux - you’re TOTALLY missing something VERY special. He’s just fantastic. This song Cincinnati just haunts me every time I hear it. Hey Rex!
OK - Now, let me say THIS…
Thank you Antone’s Nightclub, ME TV, Austin Music Foundation, my amazing band, the best booking agent in the world - Roggie Baer, Roberto the Merch Guy, the Lone Star Bears, The Gay Place, and everyone who came out to the show tonight! I saw so many people I haven’t seen in a while and it just warmed my heart to reconnect with each of you. I also was treated to new fans who, as they put it, had been “following me on the Internet” and came out to see their very first Nakia show!
Well, they couldn’t have picked a better one to start with!!
Here’s the set list from tonight’s show:
Down In A Pinch
Don’t Fight It
Broken Spoke
Ain’t Nuthin’ But The Rent *NEW SONG
Making It Up To My Baby
Driving Wheel
Playing The Cards
Texas Crescent Moon
Little Red Rooster
Touch, Feel, & Lose
Overall I was really pleased with the whole production. ME TV’s staff was super professional, Antone’s folks were just outstanding (thanks James and Byron), the band was tight and although I made a big bruise on my knees at the end of the set from doing a “twist and fall” on Touch, Feel, and Lose - I wouldn’t trade it for the world!
I was so blessed to be up there on that stage tonight. SO MANY great performers came before me and many artists just like me got their start ironing out their acts right there in that room. (or one of the other locations of Antone’s.) As I performed I could see Clifford staring at me from across the room and I felt like… Well, I really felt like it was what he wanted. Only two weeks before he passed he talked with me and Roggie about booking me at the club. You can thank Clifford for nurturing folks like Carolyn Wonderland, Ruthie Foster, Gary Clark, Jr., Del Castillo, Eve Monses, and so many more… Now, the club has a wonderful opportunity to continue that tradition with this great series from ME TV that benefits one of my favorite organizations in town, Austin Music Foundation. It was good to see the Suzanne and Alissa from AMF out tonight as well!
I have posted some pictures from the show over at my Flickr page and you can see them right now by clicking right here. (And if my niece Heather is reading this, don’t worry - there are no “naked boobies” so you won’t get in trouble if you open it at school!)
Seriously - If you came out tonight, thank you SO much. If you couldn’t make it for whatever the reason, know that I will have some video and audio of the show sooner than later and I will share it as I am able to.
The next show on the books is Maria’s Taco Xpress on Wednesday, May 16th! So get ready to get your taco munchies on, have a cold one, and groove with us in South Austin!

OK - So next week you should be listening to Bryan Beck over at KGSR In The Morning and Loris Lowe at KLBJ’s Local Licks next Tuesday night, and head over to ME Television’s contest page too.
“But why, Nakia? Why?”
Because they are all giving away tickets to next week’s ME Television Emerging Artists Series show next Thursday night at Antone’s with yours truly performing at 8PM! Doors are at 6PM with The Dedringers up first and then Tammany Hall Machine close out the night. This is going to be a kick ass show AND it is being filmed by ME TV with not just ONE camera, but FOUR!! So get out there and ham it up with all of your friends!
Also, watch for Nakia’s Notes this week (that’s my newsletter) as there will be a chance for you to win a prize package there as well!
Here’s two very different fliers for the show - you choose which you want to put up on your MySpace and promote to your friends! The first is the official one from ME TV, the other is one my good friend Mike Aldrich did.
CLICK HERE TO SEE THIS ONE AS IT MIGHT OFFEND SOME MYSPACERS
I hope to see you there… LOOK SHARP!
