Nakia Remembers Michael Jackson

Posted on June 26, 2009

Yesterday’s news about Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett was devastating. The Internet was clogged with millions of people posting on every site known to man.

Nakia posted his response about MJ on Twitter and it was quickly picked up by ABC News who contacted him via phone for an interview about his memories of Jackson and how Nakia looked to him for inspiration in his own career. Here’s a portion of the article:

Nakia Reynoso will never forget the moment he saw Michael Jackson do the moonwalk for the first time. It convinced Reynoso that he, too, was destined for the stage.

So as reports filtered in Thursday evening about Jackson’s death, the 34-year-old Austin-based musician posted to Twitter, “RIP The Man In The Mirror, Michael Jackson — I still remember the day I bought my red leather zipper coat, sequin socks and glove.”

Reynoso was just one of millions of fans who descended on the Internet last night to celebrate, mourn and remember the passing of one of the planet’s greatest musical talents.

No Depression Reviews Nakia’s Water To Wine

Posted on May 1, 2009

May Day brings a great new review from the esteemed, No Depression. Here’s an excerpt:

Soul music. With its categories and subcategories – from northern and neo to country and deep – it can be a tough concept to pin down. You might want to rely on a variation of that classic method for identifying porn: you know it when you hear it…
On the first half of this assured debut, Alabama-raised and Austin-based Nakia (last name Reynoso, but he goes by just the first) echoes various definitions of soul from over the years, some irrefutable and some fringe…The title track recalls the recordings made by R&B belter Barrence Whitfield in his second and third acts with Tom Russell and the Mercy Brothers, respectively. And “Make Love Mine Tonight” builds a bridge from Memphis to Detroit by imagining the husky, hooky work of Otis Clay at Hi smoothed a tad by an undercurrent of Smokey Robinson. I heard it. I know it.

Twangville: Nakia A Tremendous Talent

Posted on April 30, 2009

Another great review of the album just in today from Twangville! Here’s an excerpt:

Southern soul is a special thing. Alternatively inspirational and sinful, it is always engaging. Exhibit A is Austin soulman Nakia’s debut release. The Austin soulman book-ends his debut full release with “Choose Your Poison,” a down and dirty ode to guilty pleasures and “Safe Inside” a gospel ballad. In between are eight tracks that showcase the breadth of Nakia’s talent.

Nakia Interviewed About Twitter By Statesman

Posted on April 25, 2009

Recently, the Austin-American Statesman interviewed Nakia about his use of the social networking phenomena, Twitter. Several other musicians are featured in the article including @benkweller @colinmeloy @trent_reznor and more. The article was published today and is available at newstands now. Here’s an excerpt…

”@nakia Help me spread the word… Nakia & His Southern Cousins at BD Riley’s 9pm,” read a typical Twitter update from Austin soul singer Nakia during this year’s South by Southwest Music Festival. He saw potential to draw an audience to his shows using the popular social media site.

Colin Meloy, frontman for the much higher-profile SXSW headliners the Decemberists, was not as industrious with his updates: “@colinmeloy Mmmm breakfast tacos at Curra’s!”

New Review From Austin.com

Posted on April 22, 2009

And the press keeps rolling in! This time from the website, Austin.com. Here’s a sampling of what they had to say…

Austin.com

In turning water to wine, Jesus took what is already a valuable, nourishing resource and transformed it to something—while maybe not as necessary—something better. Let’s just run with that allegory and say that’s pretty much what Nakia does on his so-named debut.

In this case, southern rock will stand in for the water. Necessary for life? Why not. But Nakia & His Southern Cousins transform a southern rock base into a meritage of gospel-tinged soul. Vintage soul. The truth is Nakia has uncorked a blend (enough already with the wine puns) that has been missing from much of today’s soul music, which often relies as heavily on funk as soul. Nakia (pronounced nuh-kee-yah) eschews this easy trap. You will never find a comparison to James Brown. You will find Otis Redding, Al Green, Little Feat, or the Allman Brothers.

Austin-American Statesman Reviews Water To Wine

Posted on April 19, 2009

With the official street date of Nakia’s debut full-length, Water To Wine just last week, the Austin-American Statesman has reviewed the album for today’s Sunday edition. Alongside fellow Austin soul rockers, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, the Statesman concludes that the Austin soul scene is “in good shape.” Here’s a quick blurb from the review:

Thousands of Austinites might best recognize Nakia as the unassuming fellow pulled on-stage for a dance with soul diva Sharon Jones at the Austin City Limits Music Festival 2008. She’s not the first genre devotee to see something special in Nakia….Nakia’s rich voice and lyrics that lay bare the record’s themes of discrimination, love, loss and spirituality. “On the Bus” features an Otis Redding whistle, while “There Goes the Neighborhood” is a dizzyingly brilliant array of instrumentation and insightful lyricism. The slightly bitter “Elizabeth Lee” and “Outta My Head,” meanwhile, are frustrated odes to a lost love in the best tradition of Southern blues.

Honest Tune Reviews Water To Wine

Posted on April 6, 2009

As suspected, more press is coming in this week in conjunction with the official street date of Water To Wine. See today’s earlier post with the Texas Music Magazine review. Hot off the presses is this bright review from Honest Tune, which we have posted below. More to come soon!

Honest Tune

Written by Bill Whiting

Austin, Texas’ Nakia blooms like a bright spring flower on his debut, Water to Wine.

Co-written with Austin native Michael Fracasso (piano, guitar), Water to Wine starts with the Fracasso-penned, soul-stirring anthem “Choose Your Poison.” Nakia reaches back to his roots to capture the down-and-out blues of album’s high point, “Elizabeth Lee,” and Mac McNabb’s expert instrumentation colors the steady rocking “There Goes the Neighborhood.” Fracasso and Nakia team up on the rhythm and blues marvel “Outta My Head.”

Water to Wine is graced by the producing and engineering genius of McNabb and his astute sense of studio dynamics. When the group crosses the epic threshold of “World of Love,” it is truly hard to top the beauty and fortitude of Nakia’s Southern soul music.

Water to Wine is out now.

Texas Music Magazine Reviews Water To Wine

Posted on April 6, 2009

The Spring 2009 issue of Texas Music Magazine just shipped to subscribers this week and should be arriving on your local newsstands any day now. Check out this fantastic review below from Editor, Richard Skanse, of Nakia’s debut album, Water To Wine. Pick up a copy today to read it and lots of other great reviews and stories!

Texas Music Magazine - Spring 2009

Austin is stuffed to the gills with aspiring songwriters, but Nakia isn’t one of them. Sure, he can write a tune, but like Ruthie Foster and Malford Milligan, he’s first and foremost a gifted singer who just wants to sing the hell out of a great song. The soulful Alabama transplant wrote or co-wrote four songs on Water to Wine, including the rafter-shaking title track; but he really goes to town on the six contributions by Michael Fracasso — most notably on “There Goes the Neighborhood, ” a slyly phrased but searing comment on prejudices. Producer/guitarist Mac McNabb and a crack team of Austin’s best musicians keep the tracks tight and punchy, but it’s Nakia’s full- throated, gritty howl that lights this fire. Someday, Nakia’s vocal chops are going to be front and center as part of the next great supergroup to come out of Austin (a la the Arc Angels or Storyville). But until then, this one-name solo artist is doing just fine with a little help from his friends. — RICHARD SKANSE

Nakia’s Notes: Live Tonight At Jovita’s

Posted on March 27, 2009

So now that the dust has settled from SXSW it’s time to get right back into it and I couldn’t think of a better place to do that than Jovita’s on S. 1st Street.

If you’ve been out to one of our monthly shows at Jovita’s you already know that it’s a great family friendly Mexican restaurant with the best staff in town. They’ve got a great big stage and an even bigger dance floor! They also have free parking!

Tonight’s show will feature a couple of the guys from Dertybird starting out the evening at 8PM doing an acoustic set. As usual, the Southern Cousins take the stage at 10PM for a non-stop 2-hour set of our trademark heart poundin, sweat pourin, foot stompin, show stoppin, hot rockin, brown-eyed, southern soul!!

Nakia’s SXSW Day 2 Recap

Posted on March 15, 2009

Howdy folks! Nakia here. I will be taking some time each day before I head out to try and make sense of what happened the day/night before during SXSW.

So, here’s a recap…

  • I got a haircut at Bird’s from Sarah. She’s a frakkin’ nutjob and I love her to death! Go see her and say hi from me!
  • Lunch at Threadgill’s with Roberto the Faithful. Hmmm… King Ranch Chicken….
  • Met up with Roggie (@rajiworld) and headed over to The Belmont for the Verizon Wireless party presented by Texas Music Magazine.
    Ben Kweller sets up

They had some great folks on their line up including Ben Kweller (@benkweller) and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Confirmed that there is a review of Water To Wine coming out in the April issue of the magazine, exchanged numbers with Ray Wylie about doing some co-writing, and gave Ben props for a set well played. Roggie and I met up with Whitaker from Loophole Management - a fellow Alabamian - and then headed out for a regroup.
  • Then it was over to Stubb’s for the Diggnation party. Veeped it up on the balcony and bumped into Guy Kawasaki (@guykawasaki) and Kevin Rose (@kevinrose).
    Nakia & Kevin Rose

That party was sick! It was packed to the gills and some freak magician pour a crazy mix of milk and OJ and liquor through his nose and out of his mouth only to have people drink out of it… WFT!!??
  • After we jumped that party, we headed back to Roggie’s pad to regroup again and prep for my show at Antone’s with Carolyn Wonderland & Gary Clark, Jr. We changed and popped over to 5th and Lavaca for load-in. The room was packed and the crowd was ready. It was one of my favorite sets from any recent memory. Met a lot of new folks who were instantly converted to “Cousins” and sold a bunch of CDs, but most of all, I got to share a stage with some of my favorite musicians in a venue that I love and respect so much. It was an honor and a blessing. Thank you to everyone at Loophole and to Susan Antone for making it happen.
  • Here’s a clip from the show performing the Bobby Whitlock penned “Where There’s A Will There’s A Way.”

  • Finally, it was time to head over to The Driskill and check out that scene. I had bumped into Miles Zuniga (@mileszuniga) earlier at The Belmont and he mentioned he was playing there. We arrived to find the place packed like a can of sardines with people talking so loud I couldn’t hear myself think. Andy Langer was on hand, but stragetically placed near an exit. Smart move, Andy. It took us forever to get through the crowd and back to leave.
  • At this point, I dropped Roggie off and began “tweeting” for any word of good after hours parties. I heard from some folks about a PureVolume House party, but opted to hang with a friend for a while and then crash hard.
  • Tonight, we are playing the Austin Tweetup at Ace’s Lounge we go on at 11PM. You can RSVP by going here. Hope to see you there!
